I bought my 1973 BMW 3.0cs in 2006 from a long time customer of Carl Nelson at La Jolla Independent because of it?s long San Diego history and Carl?s strong recommendation. I have made many thoughtful improvements over the last 4 years with help from Carl. This classic 1973 is California Smog Exempt. It is not a perfect numbers matching car, but one of the most beautiful shapes ever designed with modern sports car performance.
When I bought the car it had been Upgraded / Restored including the interior and running gear. The upgrades included a 3.5 liter M30 engine and 5 speed transmission, lowered suspension, including springs and Bilstein shocks, and a shock tower strut. It has a factory sunroof and four BBS lightweight wheels. The car ran like a scalded cat from 4000-6000 rpm, but idled very rough with a 292 cam. The newer paint had spent many days in the sun at Carl?s and was oxidized, but the leather interior was beautiful.
I have spent most of my time and money improving the performance. Three months after I bought the car La Jolla Independent upgraded the 3.5 liter block with a european spec piano head from a late model 535i and added fuel injection. The next year I added Stahl 2? headers, then a Miller Performance MAF and WAR chip to improve the performance of the car on city streets. All work has been done by La Jolla Independant. The car now drives better than it ever has. It is well mannered in town but still runs like a scalded cat up steep hills and on the freeway.
The interior is black leather with red piping, Recaro bucket seats and a Momo steering wheel. All the gauges work including 3 new VDO gauges for water temp, oil pressure and volts, The clock keeps perfect time. The door and window seals have been replaced. The coupe has a new water pump and radiator. I replaced the lightweight fiberglass bumper with a new european chrome rear bumper. The front end has no bumper but a M ground spoiler kit and fog lights. It has four newer BF Goodrich G-Force 225/50r-15 tires. The paint is still the worst part of this car -oxidized and with some small bubbles and scratches, but it is a fantastic car that gets lots of positive attention on the street. I Have all receipts. The registration is paid until Jan 2012.
