The car was manufactured on May 26th, 1970 and delivered on June 3rd, 1970 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors in New York City. It was then sold new in Los Angeles and has always been registered in California. The previous owner believes he was the third owner. He had kept the car about 7 years during which time the only mods have been the radiator and electronic ignition.
In 2012 I started a major restoration which included new rocker and rear quarter panels, sanding of the body to bare metal and fixing all dents and scratches, reinforcing the differential mount area, side market delete and repainting in Fjord Blue. I have also redone the brakes in the back (drums, shoes and lines), lowered the front suspension by about 3/4" and installed BBS type 42 wheels. Inside, I have had all seats redone in new leather, a new headliner and new carpet installed. I also had la Jolla independent swap the noisy 4-speed Getrag (output bearing was giving up) in favor of another 4-speed Getrag from their recycled stock.
Recently (Feb 2014) I replaced all the seatbelts (retractable in the front) and will now look at changing the back section of the exhaust, which will be followed by a refresh of the wood trim.
The 3.2 engine is strong and runs well. It does run a bit hot sometimes and I will look at replacing the thermostat and changing the fan in favor of an electric one.
